Waving the White Flag

The Cubs have absolutely no hope of winning the N.L. Wild Card at this point. Early last week, an outside chance definitely existed. But seven straight losses, all the result of sloppy decisions at the plate as well as in the field, have sealed their fate. The 2005 season is over. I'm basically rooting for Boston, Minnesota and Oakland from here on in. I am also indescribably thankful that hockey is back, and that the Blackhawks, Bears and Bulls appear to have improved squads.

From a certain point of view, I'll grant that this season has had one positive sign, in that we remain interested late into the summer. Let's not forget that prior to the Dusty Era, the Cubs were almost always out of contention by mid-June. However, that's little consolation considering the $90 million these mopes are earning.

If I were Jim Hendry, I would:

1. Shut Wood down--schedule the operation for tomorrow if possible, so maybe the pansy will be back for opening day 2006, because he's not really helping the team in his current role.

2. Replace Ramirez and Lee with Neifi and Hollandsworth for a game or three after the St. Louis series, so they can make serious runs at the Triple Crown categories, as that's the only interesting entertainment this collection of crap might provide the fans for the remaining 50 games.

3. Let's see what this Felix Pie kid can do, and let him and Corey Patterson play every day in preparation for next season.

It's White Flag time, and it makes me really sad. The remaining games might as well be exhibitions. That being said, i'm going to the Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday Cardinals games. What can I say? I love watching baseball at Wrigley, and I'm a glutton for punishment. Those, after all, have been the glue that has held Cubdom together lo these 90+ awful years.
